Why we love Curry County
Curry County may just have the best Oregon state park that you've never visited. Get a look at these Pacific Ocean cliffs in Floras Lake State Natural Area west of Langlois.

No. 1: Rogue River
Is there a better river in Oregon than the Rogue River? Test your mettle in Blossom Bar . . .

No. 2: Best camp in Oregon
The Port of Brookings Harbor runs the only true, full-on oceanfront campground in Oregon, Beachfront RV Park. I'm glad this camper put his pants on before crossing the street to the beach from his RV. (There are also some tent sites.)

No. 3: Kalmiopsis
Enjoy the beauty of the kalmiopsis flower, because the wilderness named for it is the most rugged in the state and will kick the butt of anyone who enters it _ though there is a newly reopened 42-mile backpack trail (click the link to learn about it).

No. 4: No trees to block the view
It's just you, sand cliffs and the ocean when you visit Otter Point State Recreation Site just north of Gold Beach _ no stinking trees to block the view . . .

No. 5: We have redwoods
But if you like trees (and most people do), Curry County has them in spades. The county has Oregon's only naturally occurring redwoods, plus giant Port Orford cedars, Douglas firs and myrtlewoods, among others.

No. 6: Jet boats, too
A Rogue River Mail Boat splashes through Devils Staircase Rapids in a trip that starts and ends at Gold Beach. You haven't fully experienced Oregon if you haven't ridden a Rogue River jet boat (though you can also earn your badge at Grants Pass).
Don't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2015
No going in Blossom Bar, though
The Gold Beach jet boats need to turn around at Blossom Bar, leaving that famous rapids for rafters and kayakers.

No. 7: U.S. 101 at Myers Creek
U.S. 101 between Cape Sebastian and Pistol River is likely the most scenic stretch of highway in Oregon (if not the entire country).
Don't EditDon't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2006
Bridges have legs, too
These legs on the Thomas Creek Bridge on U.S. 101 are 345 feet high, making it the highest bridge in Oregon.

No. 8: Farthest west point
The Cape Blanco Lighthouse sits near the tip of the farthest west point in Oregon. The cape was named for its color (blanco meaning white) by a Spanish explorer in 1603.
Don't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2015
Historic home
Besides having Oregon's oldest lighthouse (lit in 1870), Cape Blanco State Park also has an historic home of an early pioneer family, the Hughes House built in 1898.

No. 9: Wild about beaches
Besides having so many scenic coastal headlands, Curry County has some of Oregon's most wild looking beaches. This is China Beach in Samuel H. Boardman State Scenic Corridor.

No. 10: Prehistoric Gardens
Where else but in Curry County can you stop along U.S. 101 and pose for a group photo with the Tyrannosaurus rex, at Prehistoric Gardens south of Port Orford.
Don't EditDon't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2015
No. 11: Indian Sands
You think Utah has arches? Get a look at this one at Indian Sands in the Boardman State Scenic Corridor. Curry County has plenty more arches, though it helps to be a dolphin to see them at their best.

No. 12: We fought ODOT and won
The good citizens of Langlois put their foot down and told the Oregon Department of Transportation that it really did deserve town signs and a slower speed limit on U.S. 101. Before that, the only reason ODOT knew Langlois existed . . . (see next slide)
Don't Edit.

World famous dogs
The highway sign says Langlois is world famous, right? This is why, the hot dogs at Langlois Market and Deli

No. 13: Mack Arch
I told you Curry County had great arches. This one is Mack Arch in Mack Reef, which unfortunately must be viewed from this distance from the viewpoint at Cape Sebastian, though I've seen in closer . . .

Don't take this photo
Back in 2006, the cover photo of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service brochure for the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge screamed to come visit Crook Point, with its view of Mack Arch. Trouble was, the brochure neglected to say the area is closed to public entry to protect wildlife habitat. The brochure was been amended after I pointed this out.

No. 14: Claim your own camp
If you didn't like the look of that RV campground at the Port of Brookings Harbor, you can camp like this on a gravel bar along the Chetco River. Camping doesn't get much better than this.
Don't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2001
Bring river toys, too
Of all the rivers in Oregon, the Chetco River may just be the wildest. You can run it during summer in an inflatable kayak, but you'll be wading as much as paddling.

No. 15: Don't get pea-ed off
When the sweet peas are blooming near Lookout Rock and Ophir, all the other wildflowers in Oregon will look bland by comparison.

No. 16: Doe, a deer
While looking for Bigfoot, I found this deer instead in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest during the drive to Vulcan Peak and the Kalmiopsis Wilderness.
Don't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2015
Cute, times two
Is there anything cuter than a deer fawn? Yes! Two of them, on the drive to Vulcan Peak.

No. 17: Blacklock Point
Hikers pasuse to soak in the view south to Cape Blanco from one of the wildest spots in the Oregon State Park system: Blacklock Point. The dog seems to be saying, "Yeah, Ranger, just try to make them put a leash on me!"
Don't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2015
No. 18: Harris Beach
The offshore rocks make Harris Beach State Park look plenty wild, too, but it's very civilized, located as it is right in Brookings and filled with Californians.
Don't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2015
No. 19: Rogue River redux
While in Curry County, your thoughts will continually go back to the Rogue River. Mule Creek Canyon in a raft is as good as outdoors gets in Oregon.
Don't EditTerry Richard/Staff/1998
Nothing beats Rogueing it
When you raft the Rogue River or hike its trail, you can stay at a different lodge every night and watch the deer until the dinner bell rings. This is Half Moon Bar Lodge on the Rogue River.
Don't EditStaff photo/2006
No. 20: Active nightlife
Curry County doesn't exactly ring with nightlife, but if you're bedding down in Gold Beach you can always stay up late to see the lights on the Isaac Lee Patterson Bridge across the Rogue River.
Don't EditDon't EditTerry Richard/Staff/2015
It could be named Gold Sunsets
Gold Beach got its name because of placer mines nearby on the Rogue River. It could have got its name from the sunsets, too.
